National Council of the Republic of Slovenia organised on 21 February 2006 a public debate on the guidelines for an act on the Roma community in Slovenia. The head of the National Council Janez Sušnik greeted all the participants. Also Janez Obreza, head of the Office for Nationalities, Pavla Štrukelj, and Jožek Horvat Muc, president of the Association of Roma, represented their views on the subject in the firs part of the debate. Second part, led by Adolf Zupan, chairman of the Political System Commission at the National Council, was dedicated to the discussion of other participants. Sharing their views on the topic were, inter alia, Ivan Bukovec, mayor of Semič Municipality, Liana Kalčina, director of the Council of Europe's Information and Documentation Centre, Irena Šumi of Institute for Ethnic Studies, Damir Josipovič, Slavko Cener, president of the Forum of Roma Councillors, Janko Halb, mayor of Rogašovci Municipality, Silvo Mesojedec, vice-president of community Bučna vas, Anton Zupet, mayor of Škocjan Municipality, Anton Hudorovac, vice-president of the Association of Roma.
Participants of a public debate shared the view that the country needs a new law, which is already being prepared by the Office for Nationalities. They also agreed that a new law should regulate the organisation of the Roma community at national and local level, and financing, bearing in mind that Roma questions are of national importance.
